Reading Museum tells stories of the local historic and natural environment as well as displaying and caring for objects from around the world.

We started out in 1883 with a bequest from local collector Horatio Bland. He left the Borough of Reading his private museum of fascinating objects from around the world, including Greek pots and a duck-billed platypus. Since then, thousands more diverse and important objects have been added to the collection - explore these pages to discover some of them! We now focus on collecting objects that have links with Reading and its people.

Click 'more' to see all the content in each category, or find downloadable information sheets about our collections and local history in the Museum Album on the right of this page.

You can also browse our online catalogue, Collections Online. Drawn from our collection database this is a growing 'shop window' for our collections including hundreds of Reading photographs.
