The picture of Calleva revealed by the Society of Antiquaries is not a complete account.
The interpretation, both of the history of the site and of
the objects found there, has changed
and developed as further work has taken place.
In the last 70 years there has been work by Mrs Molly Cotton, by George Boon, by Sir Ian Richmond
and today by Professor Michael Fulford and Amanda Clarke. Their excavations have clarified specific
details, expanded our knowledge and forced us to reconsider the conventional history of the site.
Research on objects in the collection, both by museum staff and other specialists,
has further revised our view of life in the town. As we learn more about the detailed use of objects,
date range and trade links, this process will continue.
