PIECE OF ROMAN MOSAIC PAVEMENT
FOUND AT SILCHESTER IN 1893

The pattern on this fragment is known as guilloche. It was used to frame individual motifs in floors and also as a border around whole pavements. This piece was reset and repolished, probably by the Victorian excavators, to demonstrate how it might have looked when new.

Roman Mosaic
Museum object no. 1995.85.50
