Classroom Observation: Question 57: What were the aims and outcomes of any observational drawing?


Conclusion: 58% (15) of 26 observations employed observational drawing as a way of responding to the loans. 66% (10) did drawing for collecting knowledge and information and 33% (5) did drawing for artistic and personal expression.

Observational drawing here was mainly for gathering information in relation to the design and technology of the object or the structure of an animal. It was about clue gathering to make hypotheses about the object or specimen in its time or habitat.

Summary of findings:
These results are based on observations in 26 classrooms.
  • · 58% of the project schools employed observational drawing: 53% of all primary schools and 66% of all secondary schools in the project.
  • · Out of the 15 schools that used drawing as a way of responding to the loans: 66% did drawing for collecting knowledge and information and 33% did drawing for artistic and personal expression.

1. School C: User: Primary
What were the aims and outcomes of any observational drawing?
The aim of drawing the Edwardian seaside loans was for the students to make comparisons with how these same objects are made today - noticing differences in shape, size, materials and other properties.

2. School E: User: Primary
What were the aims and outcomes of any observational drawing?
The aims of the observational drawing were to get the children to draw the specimen as it was. The lesson achieved this:
Student: "When you look and draw it is so different than just making it up. When you do that it doesn't look like the real thing."

What were the aims and outcomes of any observational drawing?
The observational drawing was a research option open to the students for gathering information in order to describe the loan to the teacher later in the lesson.

What were the aims and outcomes of any observational drawing?
The students' observational drawing with pencils was organised to take place before a discussion on what the students thought the artefacts could tell them about the past. It seems to me that it was an investigative research-centred activity.

What were the aims and outcomes of any observational drawing?
The teacher asked the students to do an observational drawing of a Kenyan animal carving to illustrate a sheet for their topic books entitles "Animals from Africa":

Teacher: "I've left the animals until last because this afternoon we are going to do drawings of animals that you can find in a Kenyan game reserve... I want you to use the display, the books and the map to do a topic sheet on animals in Africa."

What were the aims and outcomes of any observational drawing?
The drawings were done following some investigative questions concerning "forces". Even though the drawings were done in the context of research, the students produced some very artistic finished pieces.

What were the aims and outcomes of any observational drawing?
The teacher asked the group with the tram model to "Draw a sketch of it and try and label the parts". I questioned two of the students about the process:

Me: "Do you feel you are learning from drawing the tram?"
Student: "No. You can only see. You don't know the facts."
Me: "Does it make you ask questions about it?"
Student: "Yes. You wonder what the parts are."

I asked another student "Do you learn anything from drawing?"
Student: "Yes. I learned about the way the purse closes. The strap is unusual."

The aims and outcomes are to work out what each part of the model is - even if it involves guesswork that leads onto further research.

8. School N: Non-user: Primary
What were the aims and outcomes of any observational drawing?
The teacher asked two of the research groups to begin with observational drawing to aid their investigation. These were the group studying the corals and the group looking at different seaweed.

What were the aims and outcomes of any observational drawing?
The main aim was to look closely at the artefacts. To record them.


10. School Y: Non-user: Secondary
What were the aims and outcomes of any observational drawing?
To make them look closer at the object to guess facts about it.

What were the aims and outcomes of any observational drawing?
The coloured pencil drawings created by the students were artistic in nature as well as being analytical.

What were the aims and outcomes of any observational drawing?
They were all purely artistic aims and outcomes.

13. School R: User: Secondary
What were the aims and outcomes of any observational drawing?
The aims were purely artistic and cultural. The students investigated Indonesian culture and created ceremonial wall hangings in batik.

14. School S: User: Secondary
What were the aims and outcomes of any observational drawing?
There was an instance of using pastels to draw a print in order to look at it more closely - specifically at the colours, shapes, mood and composition. These are all aims related to Art.

15. School U: User: Secondary
What were the aims and outcomes of any observational drawing?
The aims were to explore pattern through the Native American beaded artefacts.
