| Student Memory Interview: Question 65: Which of the physical
aspects of the "students' choice objects" were described by the students? |
Conclusion: In relation to the one object that each student chose to
focus their memories on in detail (different from Question 4), the descriptions of the
physical aspects of these loans involved mathematical language about the orientation,
shape and size of the object. They also included other design and technology aspects such
as colour, texture, named parts, materials and function.
Summary of findings:
These findings are based on interviews with 24 primary students in Y3-Y6: 12
higher ability and 12 lower ability; 12 females and 12 males. The students were
interviewed 7 - 10 months after their use of these loans in the classroom. Descriptions
broke down into the following categories:

| Student Memory Interview: Question 65: Individual Students
Descriptions: |
1. Student B1: Male: Low Ability: Y5: Victorian Flat Iron
It looked...like a heart shape that was raised on the top. The handle went
over it like that (shows with hands). It was made of one piece of charcoal coloured iron.
The special bits were...if you turned it over it was really smooth at the bottom. On the
top it was rough.
2. Student C1: Male: Low Ability: Y3: 1930s Camera
It looked...black
The special bits were...it was pointy where you look at things
there was this pointy
bit at the front so you picture out of it like that (points to microphone) - the camera
you can see through but with glass in it. Well, there's some buttons on there what you can
press and then have a photo.
3. Student G1: Male: Low Ability: Y6: 1930s Music Box
It looked...It was a brown box with a metal key bit at the front . And it had
a green covering on the inside - it had a green cloth over it. It was wooden. With a
little metal key with a pattern on it - squiggly lines. It might have been a plant. I
can't remember - it was squiggly.
The special bits were...a green piece of material on top. That had like the same pattern
that was on the key. It was like a black pattern but it was on the wood. I think there may
have been a dancer that span around but I'm not sure. I can't remember the thing was that
span around. Often in music boxes they're like that - one leg up.
4. Student H1: Male: Low Ability: Y5: Mummified Cat
It looked...it was black. It got wrapped up in these skanky
The special bits were...it was fat - fatter than the cats are now.
5. Student L1: Male: Low Ability: Y6: Spirit of St. Louis Model Plane
It looked...the wings, it had some writing on it: it said 2X slash 11 (showed
size of wings with hands). One of the wings was about that long. And they're thin and
there was a bit at the end, Miss, where it goes up like that. It had writing on it that
said, Miss, I think it said 2X11 as well.
The special bits were...the plane had little windows. (Shape?) Square. There was some
writing on the side that said who flew it and where he flew it to. He flew it over the
Atlantic Ocean - I think. I think the person who flew it was S. Louis - Stephen Louis or
something. It said S. Louis. (Colour?) White - white/beige. It was in some glass. There
was nothing in the glass with the plane. I think it was on wood.
6. Student M1: Male: Low Ability: Y6: 1930s Blue Silk Dress
It looked...short sleeved. It was blue. It was long.
The special bits were... it had a V cut out at the collar, no, not the collar but where
buttons go on a T-shirt. It had 3 buttons going down the middle of the dress. (Was it
waisted?) I think it was, yeah, it probably was.
7. Student B2: Male: High Ability: Y4: Victorian School Bell
It looked...like a normal hand bell but a bit smaller. It was made out of
some type of metal. The handle was made of wood.
The special bits were...it was very plain really. Although it was fragile we were allowed
to ring it once. It sounded high and lasted for a long time. You could feel it vibrating.
8. Student C2: Male: High Ability: Y3: Edwardian Bathing Costume
It looked...it was blue and white. The girl had a little cap in the same colour with a
white bow at the top.
The special bits were...the trousers were quite long and it was quite skinny and thin - it
wasn't thick. They had buttons on the trousers. On the back of it at the collary bit it
was all buttons. Another student had to do it up for me.
9. Student G2: Male: High Ability: Y6: WWII Helmet
It looked...It was a pale blue. It was a round helmet. It was metal - iron. It was a
bit rusty as well.
The special bits were... It had some letters on it, I can't remember - 3 letters on it -
bomb shelter patrol or something, I don't know. It had a dent in it - at the back - it
wasn't that deep.
10. Student H2: Male: High Ability: Y5: Mummified Cat
It looked...like a walking stick with ears - a very small one.
The special bits were...I noticed the bandages were breaking up and it looked like it had
sand in it. It was a brownish sort of colour.
11. Student L2: Male: High Ability: Y6: Victorian Post Carriage Model
It looked...blue and red. At the front it had a kind of balcony bit where the driver
would sit with the horses in front. We only had about 25 minutes to look at it and draw it
because it was the last object.
The special bits were...it had two lanterns on the front. On the side it had a sign that
meant royalty and said Post - British Post or something. There was quite big, wide oblong
windows. Inside it looked like red, nice soft cushions. There was a black bit on the floor
with diamonds going across it. The wheels - on one bit they were big and on one bit they
were small - the front and the back I think. At the top it had red rails going across it
so people could sit on top on hold on. It was in a glass cabinet with a gold plate saying
something like "A Victorian carriage - used for royalty or something".
12. Student M2: Male: High Ability: Y6: 1930s Tram Model
It looked...it was sort of like a bus but more rounded at the front. It was quite big
- the model was about half a metre - that big (showed length with arms). I really remember
that (the tram) vividly in my mind.
The special bits were...and it ran on tracks rather than a road. It had 2 floors. It had
an open top on the top layer. The main colour was like browny-red, quite scarletty round.
And there was some just brown parts. (Inside?) People and chairs - actually, no there
wasn't, yes there were chairs inside with an aisle down the middle. There was bars by the
seats going up from the floor to ceiling. I think there was some green. (Anything printed
on it?) Oh yes there was but I don't remember what it was. (Made of?) Probably some
plastic - I'm not sure but there probably was some wood.
13. Student B3: Female: Low Ability: Y4: Victorian Clog
It looked...like it was made of wood. It was a shoe shape with a pointy end.
The special bits were...there was some little writing on it on the bottom. The shoe was
light brown
14. Student C3: Female: Low Ability: Y3: Edwardian Bathing Costume
It looked...the boy when he wore the trousers were all stripy with blue
stripes - and so was the top. But the top had a little thing going down there (shows
collar with hands).
The special bits were...They would keep warm - but that was only in the summer. But when
it was winter or autumn they had to go outside and were not allowed out because of the
clothes. We normally get stripes don't we. But that was a bit silky and ours isn't. You
can't pull it - the buttons were rock solid. I know what the girl wore. She had a big hat
and it had a bow on there. And it had lumps which were stripes. And the girl wore a skirt
with stripes. And she had a little cardigan which had stripes. And the buttons were soft.
15. Student G3: Female: Low Ability: Y6: WWII Hand Grenade
It looked...like a tortoise shell when you put it on its side - but it had those
things which you lift up. I can't remember what they're called now - switches I think. I
think it was made out of metal. It was just flat.
The special bits were...I think if you lifted it (switch) up it comes off. But we weren't
allowed to lift it up in case it snapped off.
16. Student H3: Female: Low Ability: Y5: Ancient Egyptian Jewellery
It looked...like lots of little stones all put on one string that were all different
sizes. They were all different colours. Some were purple.
The special bits were...normally bracelets have the same size all the way round but these
had sharp bits at the edges. The necklace was in the middle (of the display) and the two
bracelets were on either side (shows me with hands drawing the shapes on the table). I
thought it was a bit strange because why would they keep it in this glass container
instead of wearing it and selling it?
17. Student L3: Female: Low Ability: Y6: Spirit of St. Louis Model Plane
It looked...really detailed. It had all these weird things on it like I didn't know
what they were. It was really old-fashioned. And it was called this thing. It might have
had something to do with religious significance but I can't remember the name of the
actual plane. S
Was it saint something? Saint who? Not Patrick, that's an Irish name.
Did it have Saint Majuga? It was white and black. It was in a glass case - a cuboid sharp
one. I think it was red (at the bottom of the case).
The special bits were...yes, the number, I was just thinking of that number, what was it?
Was it 16? It had a number at the top and had two letters. It had a letter and a number at
the sides too. One letter then a number - I think an E. I think the border at the bottom
of the glass it might have when it was made and this Saint Majuga. I call her Majuga for
now. Might be P at the beginning of it - Saint Patrick, Paul - not Saint Nicholas.
18. Student M3: Female: Low Ability: Y6: 1930s Pink Silk Dress
It looked...it was long and it had a bow to go around your waist. It was
pretty as well. It was a baby type of pink, that type of pink. (Length?) Down to the
ankle. (Sleeves?) The sleeves were short - T-shirt length.
The special bits were...I'm not sure but I think it had a frill around the front, around
the neck. I think it had some buttons on the front.
19. Student B4: Female: High Ability: Y5: Victorian Clog
It looked...like it was made out of black leather. The sole was fixed with
big brassy buttony things around the edge
The special bits were...I think it had a little bit of metal on the sole. It was this big
(showed with hands - 16 cms)
20. Student C4: Female: High Ability: Y3: Glass Buoy
It looked.. it was glass. It was green and it had a net around it.
The special bits were...it was a circle - a 3D circle. The rope was browny.
21. Student G4: Female: High ability: Y6: WWII Helmet
It looked...it was kind of a like a dome and it was green. It had a bit
sticking out to shelter people's eyes. It had a bit of rope netting over the top of it.
The special bits were... it had a strap underneath it. I think it had a letter on the top.
(In response to: Did it have any letters on it?)
22. Student H4: Female: High Ability: Y5: Mummified Cat
It looked...it was just like a long tube thingy wrapped up in old rags
The special bits were...there were eyes - like buttons. There was a head shape like a
normal cat. The ears were here (points to the back and side of her head).
23. Student L4: Female: High Ability: Y6: Spirit of St. Louis Model Plane
It looked...they said it was old. It had a pattern on top like rectangles
that you had to do. And we had to look at all around it. And you had to get the shapes and
it had two of those
it had a spin thing at the front. It was white. I think it had
red. I think the rectangles were black. I think you could open (the case) it at the
bottom. It had a red soft thing at the bottom. Red or green. Green.
The special bits were...it had a number on the top. Something 1
6, I don't think it
was 16. There was two letters on the top I think. I thought it was S something. I'm not
sure if it had one letter and a number.
24. Student M4: Female: High Ability: Y6: 1930s Tram Model
It looked...it was quite big. It looked a bit like a bus. It was red. It had
an open top but the bottom was enclosed. (How big?) Quite big, it was about that big
(shows with hands).
The special bits were...the seats were kind of like in rows but they had a gap down the
middle so you could walk through. There was just a railing around the edge. (Anything at
front or back?) Just where the driver sits and there were some lights.. (What was the
driver's part like?) It was quite small and there was a small steering wheel and some
buttons. (How did people get up?)There was a staircase at the back of the bus - it twirled
up. (Anything printed on it?) Yeah, I think there were some signs - advertising signs.
