| Student Memory Interview: Question 67: How did the students
describe how their object felt to touch? |
Conclusion: 93% (13) of the 14 students who were describing objects that
were not under perspex described how the object felt to touch. These included references
to whether the objects were rough or smooth, heavy or light and hard or soft. Fabric
analogies such as "furry", "leathery" or "silky", the
comfort of the object to wear - and its temperature - were also described.
42% (10) of the 24 students chose to describe an object in detail that was under
perspex. Although this is representative of the number of objects that were under perspex
overall, it questions the importance of handling. It seems that an object can also be
effective in promoting learning from its manipulation in a perspex sandwich.
Summary of findings:
These findings are based on interviews with 24 primary students in Y3-Y6: 12
higher ability and 12 lower ability; 12 females and 12 males. The students were
interviewed 7 - 10 months after their use of these loans in the classroom.
- · 42% (10) out of the 24 students who were interviewed chose to describe an object in
detail that was under perspex. Is touch important or does manipulation give the student
enough control to engage with the object on an equivalent level?
- · Of the remaining 14 students who had the opportunity to touch the object they
described, 93% (13) could describe something about how it felt to touch or hold.
