Conclusion: 71% (10) of the 14 students who were describing objects that
were not under perspex responded to the question "What did it smell like?". The
majority of these were lower ability students.
The descriptions of smell were mainly adjectives such as "old",
"normal", "horrible" and "strange" as well as two specific
ones including "musky" and "wood".
Summary of findings:
These findings are based on interviews with 24 primary students in Y3-Y6: 12
higher ability and 12 lower ability; 12 females and 12 males. The students were
interviewed 7 - 10 months after their use of these loans in the classroom. 71%
(10) of the 14 students who were describing objects that were not under perspex responded
to the question "What did it smell like?":
- · 60% (6) were female students and
- · 40% (4) were male students;
- · 70% (7) were low ability and
- · 30% (3) were high ability
- · The statements fell into the following categories of smell:
5 old: 2 high ability females and 1 in the 3 other categories
2 horrible: 1 high ability male and 1 low ability female
2 specific: 1 low and 1 high ability female
2 normal: 1 low ability male and 1 low ability female
1 unspecified: 1 low ability male
