Student Memory Interview: Question 73: What emotions did the students feel when they used the loans?


Conclusion: 46% (11) of 24 students remembered the emotion they felt when they used the loans. 82% (9) of the 11 students were more likely to remember an emotional response to an object that had negative associations - such as fear, sadness and a sense of mortality - than they were to more positive associations such as happiness or mystery.

Summary of findings:
These findings are based on interviews with 24 primary students in Y3-Y6: 12 higher ability and 12 lower ability; 12 females and 12 males. The students were interviewed 7 - 10 months after their use of these loans in the classroom.
  • · Although 58% (14) of the students responded to this question, only 46% (11) actually reported a feeling or emotion. Of this 46%:
    55% (6) were male
    45% (5) were female
    45% (5) were low ability; 2 males and 3 females
    55% (6) were high ability; 5 males and 2 females
  • · 82% (9) of the statements were associated mainly with negative emotions of being upset, sad, frightened, embarrassed, feeling tingly or queasy. 18% (2) of the statements were associated mainly with positive emotions of happiness and mystery. Statements from the negative emotion category which also contained some positive emotions of happiness, thankfulness and liking (3).
  • · Students are more likely to remember an emotional response to an object that has negative associations - such as fear, sadness and a sense of mortality - than they are to those that have positive associations such as happiness or mystery.

I felt...it was older than anything I'd seen before. It made me feel funny.

2. Student C2: Male: High Ability: Y3: Edwardian Bathing Costume
I felt...a bit embarrassed - standing in front of the everyone else in the class (in the costume) Everyone in the class burst into laughter. Actually I liked it a bit too, it was fun. I felt too embarrassed to be thinking anything except standing there looking stupid.

I felt...quite sad that someone had died in it or something but quite happy it had been passed on to us.

I felt...really upset because it reminded me of my Granddad.

I felt...kind of thankful that there isn't a war now. There was just something about it that made you feel a bit queasy.

I felt...tingly. It was just a bit weird and strange to see a cat mummified because they don't do it now, do they?

I felt...happy because I could learn more about Literacy as well as that. And when I went into Literacy the next day, the people from our class which was in the same Literacy group would know a lot more than anybody else there.

11. Student L2: Male: High Ability: Y6: Victorian Post Carriage Model
I felt...that it was like mystical because you didn't know much about it. All you knew it was a Victorian carriage and they told us we had to imagine the rest.
