Student Memory Interview: Question 74: What did the students imagine when they saw the loans?

Conclusion: 75% (18) of 24 students responded to the question: "Did you imagine anything when you used the loans?". These imaginations either involved imagining themselves with the object (7) or another person with the object (11).

The statements also fell into further categories of those that outlined either the functional (9) or historical (5) context of the object or complete fantasies (4). The latter category was mainly composed of higher ability students.

Like the responses to thinking (Question 8) and understanding (Question 12), this is a high level of response. This finding points to a strong link between the use of a created object and creative - as well as logical - thinking processes.

Summary of findings:
These findings are based on interviews with 24 primary students in Y3-Y6: 12 higher ability and 12 lower ability; 12 females and 12 males. The students were interviewed 7 - 10 months after their use of these loans in the classroom.
  • · 75% (18) of 24 students responded to the question: "Did you imagine anything when you used the loans? If so, what?":
    44% (8) were male
    56% (10) were female
    50% (9) were low ability
    50% (9) were high ability
Females were more likely to respond to a question about the imagination than males.
  • · The statements fell into the following categories:
    61% (11) Imaginations that involved "other" (5M/6F; 5L/6H)
    39% (7) Imaginations that involved the student him/herself (3M/4F; 4L/3H)
There was little difference between gender and ability reflected in these statements.
  • · The statements also fell into these further categories:
50% (9) Imaginations which visualised the functional context of the object. Example: (of the model plane) "Miss, I was imagining flying it!"
28% (5) Imaginations which visualised the historical and functional context of the object. Example: (of a 1930's dress) "I imagined 30's people wearing it; a lady in a park or she's gone out for a nice walk with her husband or something."
78% (14) of the students recognised the correct function of the objects in their imagination while just over a third of these also imagined them being used in their historical setting.
22% (4) Complete fantasies inspired by the object. Examples: (of the mummified cat) "I imagined it was going to jump out and kill me!"; (in relation to the Rocket model) "We drew this world that we made up with these train tracks and the different buildings. And I drew this
massive train for it...There's a modern one on half the page and an old one on the other side."

There was little difference between gender and ability reflected in the 2 former categories. In the latter category there were 3 high ability students and 1 low ability student.

Student Memory Interview: Question 74: Individual Student Descriptions

1. Student B1: Male: Low Ability: Y5: Victorian Flat Iron
I imagined...someone using an iron on the floor - a woman at home wearing all these different clothes.

2. Student B3: Female: Low Ability: Y4: Victorian Clog
I imagined...a little girl wearing a shoe with blonde hair and a Victorian dress.

3. Student C2: Male: High Ability: Y3: Edwardian Bathing Costume
I imagined...like I might be at the seaside like just stepping onto it. But I knew I was straight in the classroom. But half of me just did it because it was a bit the same like this (touches the carpet) and it felt a bit squiggly like sand - but it felt a bit hard so I knew it couldn't be sand because the sand is soft all over and this only has a few little soft bits.

4. Student C3: Female: Low Ability: Y3: Edwardian Bathing Costume
I imagined...of them on the beach in summer all playing together on the beach with their bucket and spade. The bucket would be all metal and so would be the handle and if it had pictures on it, it would look all nice if you went to buy it. But if it was just metal you wouldn't like to get it. There was a boy playing on the beach (on the bucket). It was nice and hot in summer. It was yellow, blue, white and black.

5. Student C4: Female: High Ability: Y3: Glass Buoy
I imagined...it in the sea with boats. I was a sunny quiet day.

6. Student G2: Male: High Ability: Y6: WWII Helmet
I imagined...someone wearing it in WWII. The helmet was hit by a bullet or a piece of building.

7. Student G4: Female: High Ability: Y6: WWII Helmet
I imagined...someone in those ditches - trenches they used to have with a hat on. And then when it came to the museum and stuff.

8. Student H1: Male: Low Ability: Y5: Mummified Cat
I imagined...it was going to jump out and kill me.

9. Student H3: Female: Low Ability: Y5: Ancient Egyptian Jewellery
I imagined…if my necklaces and bracelets were like that.

10. Student H4: Female: High Ability: Y5: Mummified Cat
I imagined...my cat getting mummified - horrible and sad.

11. Student L1: Male: Low Ability: Y6: Spirit of St. Louis Model Plane
I imagined...for a minute, Miss. I said that I was actually dreaming. (Danny: He said he thought he was flying it. I said "Take me along!") Miss, I was imagining flying it.

12. Student L2: Male: High Ability: Y6: Victorian Post Carriage Model
I imagined...that made us draw this world that we made up with these train tracks and the different buildings. And I drew up this massive train for it, I think another student's got it at the moment but I'm not sure. There's a modern one on half the page and an old one on the other side

13. Student L3: Female: Low Ability: Y6: Spirit of St. Louis Model Plane
I imagined...I was flying in it.

14. Student L4: Female: High Ability: Y6: Spirit of St. Louis Model Plane
I imagined...I thought I would have liked to go inside it with lots of people and have a party in it.

15. Student M1: Low Ability Male: Y6: 1930's Blue Silk Dress
I imagined...I wrote a whole story on it. Because the teacher in - it was History wasn't it? He got us to write a story about it. I imagined that the Queen wore it and it was stolen. That's all I can remember about the story because it wasn't a very good story!

16. Student M2: Male: High Ability: Y6: 1930s Tram Model
I imagined...it going down the road, well, on a little track.

17. Student M3: Female: Low Ability: Y6: 1930s Pink Silk Dress
I imagined...30's people wearing it; a lady in a park or she's gone out for a nice walk with her husband or something.

18. Student M4: Female: High Ability: Y6: 1930s Tram Model
I imagined...it going quite slowly down the road. And then I could see it bumping up and down.
