Student Memory Interview: Question 75: What were the students reminded of when they saw the loans?

Conclusion: 42% (10) of 24 students responded to the question: "Did the loans remind you of anything? If so, what?" Nearly all the high ability males responded to this question making up 50% of the total responses.

60% (6) of the 10 students that responded to the question referred to contemporary versions of the object - making comparisons or a fusion in their mind and tracing the objects' technological history in some way. The remaining student were reminded either of a film they had seen (2) or a more personal experience (2).

Summary of findings:
These findings are based on interviews with 24 primary students in Y3-Y6: 12 higher ability and 12 lower ability; 12 females and 12 males. The students were interviewed 7 - 10 months after their use of these loans in the classroom.
  • · 42% (10) of 24 students responded to the question: "Did the loans remind you of anything? If so, what?":
    70% (7) were male
    30% (3) were female
40% (4) were low ability; 2 males and 2 females
60% (6) were high ability; 5 males and 1 female
It is significant that nearly all the high ability males responded to this question making up 50% of the total responses.
  • · The statements fall into the following categories:
60% (6) of the students were reminded of contemporary versions of the object. Example: (of model tram) "Sort of like a bus and train put together" or (of Victorian iron) I.
  • 20% (2) of the students were reminded of films that they had seen relating to the object. Example: (of WWII helmet) "I was reminded of some films I saw" or (of 1930s music box) "I was reminded of a film I had seen recently. This girl found this magic box and I thought of that."
  • 20% (2) of the students were reminded of a more personal experience/knowledge. Example: (of WWII hand grenade) "I was reminded of when my Granddad was in WWII. He was just about to throw the grenade but it went off just before he was about to throw it. My Granddad had a grenade and he was just about to open it and someone came up behind him and opened it and he blew to pieces." or (of 1930's blue silk dress) "I was reminded of a colour I used in art. A colour paint - I almost got the exact colour. I wasn't trying to, I got it by chance."
  • · One extraordinary statement was a from an average to high ability boy in Y6 concerning the model post carriage:
"I was reminded of a modern car and making it go back. What do you call it when...do you know when you make it more technology, what do you call it when you take it back? Not so much technology? I was taking things of it and adding things on... I pictured it in my mind and made it go backwards with less technology. I was taking things off. The first thing I took off was the engine."
  • · More than half the students that responded to the question (60%) referred to contemporary versions of the object - making comparisons or a fusion in their mind and tracing the objects' technological history in some way.
