Teacher Interview: Question 11: Individual Answers:

Key: A "user" is a school that already uses the loan service. A "non-user" is a school that does not currently use the loan service.

1. Teacher A: User: Primary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
The knitted farm is always a huge success - lots more of this sort of loan! We find that the animals and birds are very useful. They learn a lot about scale from seeing them. They are not always sure they are real because they are not alive. They seem to equate "alive" with "real".

2. Teacher B: User: Primary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
Different children are interested by different things. The boys were really interested in the Tudor ship while the girls liked the costumes.

3. Teacher C: User: Primary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
The Edwardian swimming costumes.

4. Teacher D: User: Primary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
The two Tudor people. We looked at the type of fabric decoration they had. Specific history skills were developed from looking at things like the Indian shoes and the lion lamp.

5. Teacher E: User: Primary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
The Viking ship; the Sikh box and the Victorian dolls were all very good.

6. Teacher F: User: Primary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
They were far more taken with the steam engine because of the size and colour.

7. Teacher G: User: Primary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
I think the Greek lamps - they really enjoyed looking at them. Also the boat which led to them making their own models. (The children I observed said they learnt the most from the ration book and the gas mask from the loans this time round)

8. Teacher H: User: Primary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
The mummified cat.

9. Teacher I: User: Primary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
The biscuit tin. They were fascinated by the hinges - tins today don't have hinges. Also the picture on the front (roses) and the picture of the arrangement of the biscuits on the back of the tin. Now we have this in paper form inside the tin. Also the tiles. We worked with these a lot as they linked most with our project.

10. Teacher J: User: Primary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
The models used this time (including the tram) have been fantastic for Y2 children but the younger children prefer objects that they can touch and that give them a sense of awe and wonder.

11. Teacher K: User: Primary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
Lesley said she did not have enough experience of the loans to answer this question.

12. Teacher L: User: Primary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
They love the toys which we have as a topic every other year. They especially like the Victorian optical toys. They are so unsophisticated compared to their own toys but they still love them. Also the scrub boards, wash boards, and old-fashioned washing machine - they can touch and play with these objects.

13. Teacher M: Non-user: Primary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
Not at this point.

14. Teacher N: Non-user: Primary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
I can say the other way round. The only group that did not get into the loans was the seaweed group with the examples of seaweed. With all the other groups it was "Wow!". (Seagull and large shells)

15. Teacher O: Non-user: Primary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
Our own Victorian artefacts (she showed me a photograph of a large display of original Victorian objects). They are all of a good standard.

16. Teacher P: Non-user: Primary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
The human skeleton model.

17. Teacher Q: User: Secondary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
WWII memorabilia. Cases where there are lots of objects. Because kids want to know more about the people who owned them. Its awe and wonder - possession by other people in the past.

18. Teacher R: User: Secondary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
In the past, the musical instruments from Africa. They were fascinated with them. Also the North American Indian papoose and stitched, beaded slippers.

19. Teacher S: User: Secondary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
The ordering is always specific to the task in mind. We constantly find the animals useful for texture - especially the larger animals.

20. Teacher T: User: Secondary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
Things that they can try on and use because it makes it interesting to them. Loans that you can do something with. Oral history can add to the display and bring it alive (Had an elderly person explain about the use of the ration books to the students.)

21. Teacher U: User: Secondary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
Depends - objects are chosen to be built into a scheme of work so all are important. They are better and more attractive if they are in smaller boxes so that all the girls can see them, e.g. butterflies.

22. Teacher V: Non-user: Secondary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
A loan of Roman tools. Students tend to think that people in the past were thick somehow. They look at things and think about their sophistication. The loans are good for altering misconceptions like this.

23. Teacher W: Non-user: Secondary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
They liked all 4 of the loans. But they particularly liked the fact that they could touch and smell the Native American jacket.

24. Teacher X: Non-user: Secondary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
The boys like the weaponry, they like feeling the weight of the weapons. The sides of the lamps were rubbed to see if a genie would come out!

25. Teacher Y: Non-user: Secondary
Can you select one object that you know your students learned a lot from?
A medieval castle model that was sectioned out. The students have learnt a lot from re-enactments (Learning Through Action). We had a "Roman soldier" come in and they got a lot out of that.
