| Teacher Interview: Question 13: If you ask the students to
do observational drawing of the loans what are you aiming to encourage? |
Conclusion: Art skills only account for 24% (8) of 33 aims for
observational drawing of loans as set by 20 teachers. Although many of these teachers may
see observational drawing as coming under Art & Design, 33% (11) of the 33 aims are
for the students to develop more scientific analytical skills through looking.
Other aims were described as: learning about history (12%); examining evidence (9%);
and gaining knowledge of the object (6%). Additional aims include: to encourage handling,
to create diagrams, to illustrate a topic, to inspire the imagination and to develop motor
control (3% each).
Summary of findings:
20 teachers suggested 33 aims. The following information illustrates the
categories into which these aims could be sorted and the percentage of occurrence of these
stated aims.
- · 33% (11) of the aims were to encourage looking: Teachers A, B, D, E, G, H, I, M, N, Q
and R.
- · 24% (8) of the aims were to encourage art skills: Teachers B, G, I, N, O, R, S and X.
- · 12% (4) of the aims were to encourage the learning of history: Teachers C, I, V and
W.
- · 9% (3) of the aims were to encourage the analysis of evidence: Teachers F, H and X.
- · 6% (2) of the aims were to encourage knowledge of the object: Teachers Q and Y.
- · 3% (1) of the aims were to encourage handling: Teacher I.
- · 3% (1) of the aims were to encourage accurate diagrams: Teacher P.
- · 3% (1) of the aims were illustrate a topic: Teacher F.
- · 3% (1) of the aims were to encourage the imagination: Teacher A.
- · 3% (1) of the aims were to encourage fine motor control: Teacher A.

| Teacher Interview: Question 13: Individual Answers: |
Key: A "user" is a school that already uses the loan
service. A "non-user" is a school that does not currently use the loan service.
1. Teacher A: User: Primary
If you ask the students to do observational drawing of the loans what are you aiming to
encourage?
Lots of things. The main aim is to look. Also to develop fine motor control. It
encourages the use of the imagination and role play as they look. The main aim really is
to focus their attention.
2. Teacher B: User: Primary
If you ask the students to do observational drawing of the loans what are you aiming to
encourage?
Looking at detail. Lots of observation. Developing artistic skills - yet while they
are doing this they are deciding what it is.
3. Teacher C: User: Primary
If you ask the students to do observational drawing of the loans what are you
aiming to encourage?
An awareness of the differences between what things were like then and now.
4. Teacher D: User: Primary
If you ask the students to do observational drawing of the loans what are you aiming to
encourage?
Its more to do with noticing fine detail rather than art skills.
5. Teacher E: User: Primary
If you ask the students to do observational drawing of the loans what are you aiming to
encourage?
Looking at finer details. With the insects we have borrowed they will be drawing the
food chain.
6. Teacher F: User: Primary
If you ask the students to do observational drawing of the loans what are you aiming to
encourage?
To illustrate their topic. To analyse what they've done.
7. Teacher G: User: Primary
If you ask the students to do observational drawing of the loans what are you aiming to
encourage?
Really look closely and carefully at the object: the detail, the size, and the feel.
Good drawing skills too.
8. Teacher H: User: Primary
If you ask the students to do observational drawing of the loans what are you aiming to
encourage?
Looking and observing closely. Looking for bits of evidence at materials.
9. Teacher I: User: Primary
If you ask the students to do observational drawing of the loans what are you aiming to
encourage?
Mixed with the art skills there is the learning history side at the same time. It gave
them a chance to observe, to handle and to have a "proper look".
10. Teacher M: Non-user: Primary
If you ask the students to do observational drawing of the loans what are you aiming to
encourage?
They don't observe until they actually draw something. If we walked out of the room
right now would we be able to remember details about that dress? We are innately
unobservant. We pass things by every day. Through drawing you observe special features.
11. Teacher N: Non-user: Primary
If you ask the students to do observational drawing of the loans what are you aiming to
encourage?
Line work, accurate shape, colour mixing, proportion, shading, detail, looking 3D -
art skills.
12. Teacher O: Non-user: Primary
If you ask the students to do observational drawing of the loans what are you aiming to
encourage?
To try and produce a still life as opposed to an abstract. They need to draw so it
"looks real" - to be able to draw it as it looks.
13. Teacher P: Non-user: Primary
If you ask the students to do observational drawing of the loans what are you aiming to
encourage?
Accurate diagrams covering main aspects.
14. Teacher Q: User: Secondary
If you ask the students to do observational drawing of the loans what are you aiming to
encourage?
Looking and seeing. Knowledge of the object. And recording what they see.
15. Teacher R: User: Secondary
If you ask the students to do observational drawing of the loans what are you aiming to
encourage?
Skills of observation and use of signs, symbols, surface patterns and expressive
aspects.
16. Teacher S: User: Secondary
If you ask the students to do observational drawing of the loans what are you aiming to
encourage?
Attention to line, tone and colour.
17. Teacher V: Non-user: Secondary
If you ask the students to do observational drawing of the loans what are you aiming to
encourage?
You get into the different things students are able to do. There are many different
ways of learning. Some students can get into it by drawing. They begin to understand the
concept of change through the differences and contrasts they draw.
18. Teacher W: Non-user: Secondary
If you ask the students to do observational drawing of the loans what are you aiming to
encourage?
I'm not encouraging art work. I want them to "draw conclusions". As they
investigate what they see they can think about the designs and aspects of Native American
life - how they might have fitted into that life.
19. Teacher X: Non-user: Secondary
If you ask the students to do observational drawing of the loans what are you aiming to
encourage?
At the start of their study on the Romans, I ask them to go through their textbook and
find the most important example of primary evidence and draw it. One piece can be more
valuable than another in the information that it gives. I'm encouraging an accurate
representation, so artistic skills to that extent, but I'm asking them to evaluate the
importance of the evidence.
20. Teacher Y: Non-user: Secondary
If you ask the students to do observational drawing of the loans what are you aiming to
encourage?
The interpretation of the thing. What was it? If it was a fragment - try and draw what
you think the rest of it looked like.
