Key: A "user" is a school that already uses the loan
service. A "non-user" is a school that does not currently use the loan service.
1. Teacher A: User: Primary
If you encourage questioning about the objects do you start with the students' questions
or some that you have devised?
Other: Both
2. Teacher B: User: Primary
If you encourage questioning about the objects do you start with the students' questions
or some that you have devised?
Teachers
Some start asking questions before you've started, but the teacher would probably
start generally.
3. Teacher C: User: Primary
If you encourage questioning about the objects do you start with the students' questions
or some that you have devised?
Teachers
Initial open-ended questions.
4. Teacher D: User: Primary
If you encourage questioning about the objects do you start with the students' questions
or some that you have devised?
Teachers
I start with mine then I ask if there is anything else they want to ask.
5. Teacher E: User: Primary
If you encourage questioning about the objects do you start with the students' questions
or some that you have devised?
Teachers
First my questions, then theirs.
6. Teacher F: User: Primary
If you encourage questioning about the objects do you start with the students' questions
or some that you have devised?
Teachers
Me. Then I see what I get back. This age is different from older children who
formulate their own questions.
7. Teacher G: User: Primary
If you encourage questioning about the objects do you start with the students' questions
or some that you have devised?
Other: Both
Sometimes just after the objects have been put out on display - they ask "Can I put
it out!" - they swarm around them asking "What's this and what's that?". It
depends on what my plans are as to whether I tell them.
8. Teacher H: User: Primary
If you encourage questioning about the objects do you start with the students' questions
or some that you have devised?
Teachers
The teacher has ideas in mind and steers the questioning. The questions then come from
the students. Questioning is a hard skill to develop.
9. Teacher I: User: Primary
If you encourage questioning about the objects do you start with the students' questions
or some that you have devised?
Teachers
I give them the information first then ask them for questions.
10. Teacher M: Non-user: Primary
If you encourage questioning about the objects do you start with the students' questions
or some that you have devised?
Teachers
I start with my questions, then their questions develop.
11. Teacher N: Non-user: Primary
If you encourage questioning about the objects do you start with the students'
questions or some that you have devised?
Teachers
It is the same as teaching in other areas - you have your agenda but you make them
feel the questions have come from them. That way you get more work out of them.
12. Teacher O: Non-user: Primary
If you encourage questioning about the objects do you start with the students' questions
or some that you have devised?
Teachers
The teacher always has some, or one to start with. It depends on age appropriateness.
If they are younger the teacher would prepare more questions; for Y6, none.
13. Teacher P: Non-user: Primary
If you encourage questioning about the objects do you start with the students' questions
or some that you have devised?
Students
14. Teacher Q: User: Secondary
If you encourage questioning about the objects do you start with the students' questions
or some that you have devised?
Teachers
I start with introducing them myself: What do you think this is? In art, the
introduction has to be more specific because it is more difficult to talk about.
15. Teacher R: User: Secondary
If you encourage questioning about the objects do you start with the students' questions
or some that you have devised?
Students
They are fascinated by them.
16. Teacher S: User: Secondary
If you encourage questioning about the objects do you start with the students' questions
or some that you have devised?
Teachers
It is a bit of both but I start with mine and encourage them.
17. Teacher V: Non-user: Secondary
If you encourage questioning about the objects do you start with the students' questions
or some that you have devised?
Other: Both
I would ask a question then that would lead to students devising their own.
18. Teacher W: Non-user: Secondary
If you encourage questioning about the objects do you start with the students' questions
or some that you have devised?
Teachers
19. Teacher X: Non-user: Secondary
If you encourage questioning about the objects do you start with the students' questions
or some that you have devised?
Students
This evolves. The students ask me questions and I'll say "Let's see" and
elaborate on what we know already.
20. Teacher Y: Non-user: Secondary
If you encourage questioning about the objects do you start with the students' questions
or some that you have devised?
Other: Both
I organise group work so that kids can freely ask questions. But you need to give them
a basis - they need a frame to hang their hat on.
