Teacher Interview: Question 27: Would the importance of the loans service to the school change if you had to pay?

Conclusion: 55% (11) of 20 teachers said that the importance of having access to the loan service would change considerably if the school had to pay from their budget. In nearly all cases the rating of the importance of the loan service dropped to the lowest half of the scale, with the majority giving it a rating of 2 on a 1-6 scale.

This is a bleak picture in the light of those unitary authorities who have or are considering devolving their previous financial support back to individual schools.

Summary of findings:
20 teachers were asked this question. These are their responses.
  • · 55% (11) of the teachers said that the importance of having access to the loan service would change considerably if the school had to pay.

  • · The remaining 40% (8) of the teachers said that having to pay would not change the importance of access to a loan service but most expressed doubts as to whether or not the school could continue ordering from the service considering their limited budget.
  • · One teacher (5%) said that the importance of the loan service to the school would be dependent on exactly how much would be charged.

1. Teacher A: User: Primary
Would this change in any way if you had to pay?
Yes = 1 2 3 4 5 6
Yes, its importance to us would decrease because we would not have the budget to pay for it.

2. Teacher B: User: Primary
Would this change in any way if you had to pay?
No
It hasn't changed in importance since we have had to pay but we can't order every term now, we have to be more choosy.

3. Teacher C: User: Primary
Would this change in any way if you had to pay?
Yes = 1 2 3 4 5 6
It really depends on finance - if money is delegated for the service.

4. Teacher D: User: Primary
Would this change in any way if you had to pay?
Yes = 1 2 3 4 5 6
For the whole school, I have had a £1 budget for history for the last three years. I could buy a couple of postcards! It would all have to be negotiated with the other teachers.

5. Teacher E: User: Primary
Would this change in any way if you had to pay?
Yes = 1 2 3 4 5 6
I can't say where it would rate, it would be a school decision. It is still important but whether we could fund it or not, I don't know.

6. Teacher F: User: Primary
Would this change in any way if you had to pay?
Yes = 1 2 3 4 5 6
I have £50 a year to support History. I couldn't do it. There is no freedom. I need the money for vital things.

7. Teacher G: User: Primary
Would this change in any way if you had to pay?

The value of the service wouldn't change but whether we could afford it as far as our budget is concerned would be the difference.

Yes = 1 2 3 4 5 6

Its the school's problem with funding.

The values don't change but the actual mechanics do. Budgets can be trimmed.

Would this change in any way if you had to pay?

It would mean things would have to be good and relevant. It would change they way you looked at the loans.

12. Teacher O: Non-user: Primary
Would this change in any way if you had to pay?

Each coordinator has a budget. It is the same difference as to whether you buy or rent a TV. You can buy 3 good artefacts or you can have more selection.

It is not cost effective. I have a yearly budget of £1000. You need something for year in and year out. The loans are only for a limited time.

20. Teacher Y: Non-user: Secondary
Would this change in any way if you had to pay?
No
You have to pay for quality providing you are getting value for money. You just have to budget for it - maybe give a small charge to the pupils.
