New look for the Museum website - coming soon

This summer watch out for a radical change to the Reading Museum website!

We love our website but it's showing its age a bit now, so we've got a new one in development - the picture gives you an idea what the home page will look like. We'll be taking the opportunity to make some changes to the layout so things should be easier to find, and it will help us make even more news, activities and collection information available in the future.
We hope you'll like it!

  Arts Fund Prize update

Reading Museum's Outside the Box project was one of 10 museum and gallery projects across Britain long-listed for the Art Fund Prize for museums and galleries 2009.

The Art Fund Prize is the largest single arts prize in the UK and recognises and rewards the best new development of the previous calendar year in a museum or gallery, large or small, anywhere in the United Kingdom.

Graeme Hoskin, Reading's lead concillor for culture and sport, said: "The whole project is fantastic. It has been about getting people really excited about Reading".

Outside the Box is about getting real objects out of store and into the community. The Museum has a strong commitment to making collections accessible to all. Schools, colleges, care homes and local community groups have all benefited from this fantastic loans service, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and our 20 partners.

Local entertainer Chris Tarrant recently visited the Museum to offer his support for our bid to win the Art Fund Prize for museums and galleries 2009. He said "I have very fond memories of Reading as a child, the whole place smelled of biscuits and beer!". Thank you to Chris and all the support we have received from the local community and beyond.

You can find out more on our Outside the Box page

Congratulations and good luck to the final four on the shortlist.

  The Biscuit Tin Café

The Museum's family-friendly café, just behind the Town Hall reception area, is open daily. Aimed at families and children, the café sells fair trade tea and coffee, homemade biscuits and cakes.

The cafe is open Monday - Saturday, 10-4 and 11-4 Sunday.

  Riverside Museum open every day

The Riverside Museum at Blake's Lock tells the story of Reading's two rivers. Its centrepiece is the Dunton's gypsy caravan that was built on the banks of the River Kennet. Admission is free. The Museum is open daily in partnership with the Bel and The Dragon restaurant that also occupies the site.

A Riverside Trail leaflet links the Museum with central Reading. Pick up your free copy from our museums or call us on 0118 939 9800. See the ‘About Us’ page for a location map and opening hours.
