In ground-breaking research, funded by the DfES, the benefit of learning with objects has been dramatically demonstrated. Findings from the project underline the fact that museum objects provide a creative pathway to learning for students of all abilities within the formal education setting. 'Hands-on Learning' with Reading Museum Service offers:

Unique objects supporting the National Curriculum

Handling objects is a key element in our gallery and classroom sessions. These are based around some of Reading´s unique collections including the Roman Silchester collection, the Huntley & Palmers biscuit collection, the Victorian copy of the Bayeux Tapestry and works from our Art collection amongst others. Classroom Sessions currently available are included in the 'Have Box - Will Travel' range. All sessions underpin the requirements of the National Curriculum and are in line with QCA recommended schemes of work.

Loans On-line enables everyone to browse over 1700 loans boxes packed with museum collections that cover all areas of the National Curriculum. As a subscriber, you can book your choices on-line, up to two years in advance, allowing you to plan lessons ahead. The boxes are delivered to and collected from your school twice each term.

Our 'Hands-on Learning' menu options allow you to devise a flexible programme that fits with your own teaching needs. Services and prices have been devised specifically to meet the needs of today´s busy teachers. We feel confident that you, your pupils and their parents or guardians will want to become a member of 'Hands-on Learning'.

If you are unable to take advantage of our membership scheme all services are still available at the following prices:

        * Individual loans boxes can be delivered per half term at £30 per box
        * Individual Topic display units at £90 per unit
        * Museum Gallery Session
        * One session in the Museum led by our trainied staff -(duration two hours) at £78, maximum group no. 35
        * Museum Classroom Session
        * One session in your classroom led by museum staff - (duration two hours) at £185, maximum group no. 40
        * One museum classroom session - (duration one hour) at £93, maximum group no. 40. Suitable for foundation and key stage 1 only
