Book Making - Animal Exhibition

Venue: Reading Museum

What

Make your own hardback A6 notebook from scratch, suitable for writing and drawing, or great as a gift for someone special.

This is a traditional style of notebook with hard covers and spine, and fabric cover.  You will sew your book together using traditional French link stitch, and the spine will be reinforced with glue and wet strength tissue.

The workshop is suitable for all levels of experience but please be aware that we will be cutting, sewing and gluing so some manual dexterity is needed.

Things for students to bring

  • Scissors
  • Jam jar
  • Glue brush (½ inch stencil brush is ideal)
  • Drawing tools: Pencil, eraser, sharpener
  • Cutting tools: Cutting mat (A3 or bigger if possible), sturdy craft or cutting knife (scalpel is too delicate), metal ruler
  • Blunt ended sewing needle with large eye (eg tapestry needle)
  • Waxed paper to press your book and to carry your book home. The waxed paper from cereal packets works well for this. Please clean out the crumbs!

If you have any of the following tools please bring them otherwise they can be borrowed from the tutor:

  • Fabric scissors or rotary cutter
  • Bone folder (for creasing paper)
  • Small awl / braddle (for making holes in paper and card)
  • Paper knife / clip knife / shoe knife (for slicing paper)

Workshop cost includes all materials including paper, greyboard, fabric, wet strength tissue, linen thread, and glue.
