25-31 August 2025 - 10am-6pm daily
Venue: The Turbine House Riverside Museum at Blake’s Lock
Heather McAteer first exhibited at the Turbine House in 2018 with The Turbulent Waters of Youth, a site-specific, text-based installation inspired by a passage from James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. A line from that same excerpt—“I shall express myself as I am”—now lends its name to her return as artist in residence.
During the residency, visitors are invited to explore a selection of Heather’s past and recent work, works in progress, and the diverse historical and contemporary references that inform her practice. More than a traditional exhibition, this event serves as a space for reflection and conversation, focusing on themes of identity and memory and the ongoing evolution of creative work.
I shall express myself as I am serves both as a declaration and an invitation: rather than offering conclusions, it opens up a space for connection, introspection and dialogue.
