The Forbury Lion is a Victorian icon, commemorating a desperate act of valour in an ill-fated campaign on the fringes of Empire. This talk by local author Robert Clarke, traces his story through its wide-ranging connections with Reading’s ambitious civic and commercial expansion from dull market town and stage-coach stop to railway hub and “regional capital”, where, after almost 150 years, the Lion still stands as a proud symbol of the town’s identity.
About the speaker: Robert’s first encounter with the Lion – in 1984 during the planning for the controversial completion of the IDR – prompted the question “who is asking whom to remember what … and why?” His book shows that there is more than one answer.
