What to see - Permanent galleries

Our museum galleries house wonderful historic and artistic objects both local and global - you can browse each gallery below. The Sir John Madejski Art Gallery hosts a changing programme of temporary exhibitions for you to enjoy. Don’t miss a visit to our shop once you have had a good look around.

Highlights include important archaeological finds from Roman Silchester and medieval Reading Abbey. There is also our unique Victorian copy of the Bayeux Tapestry, contemporary Aldermaston Pottery and the famous Huntley & Palmers biscuit tins.

Our Riverside Museum is a short stroll away from Reading Museum, through the Abbey Quarter, and has one permanent gallery and a second space which is used for community art exhibitions during the summer.

Many school groups use our galleries in term-time weekdays between 10 am and 2.15 pm. If you wish to see a particularly gallery, it may be advisable to visit outside these times or contact us in advance. The galleries are generally quieter after 2.30 pm.
