Museum projects

We work with individuals, community groups, schools and other museums to deliver inspiring projects. Our collections and Reading’s heritage are central to these projects, making sure we can show as much of the material we have as possible. Our popular 'show and tell'  projects are led by local organisations that use their own collection to fill the community display case in the Story of Reading Gallery.

Our projects and programmes range from traditional museum projects such as creating exhibitions to meeting 21st century needs by developing our social media:

  • Roman Britain Reimagined in Reading will refresh the Museum's Roman Silchester Gallery to tell new stories about the Roman town of Calleva, based on the most recent archaeological research by the University of Reading, and to enhance the visitor experience. You can find out more on the project page.
  • Reading's Digital Revolution - this project discovered the story of how Reading helped shape the future of technology. It celebrated the 60th anniversary of Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) opening its first UK office here in 1964, a milestone that transformed our town into a hub of innovation and laid the foundations for the UK’s own ‘Silicon Valley.’ It culminated in a major exhibition in 2025 and created an online version that you can explore.
  • Reading's High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) - we worked closely with the project team of this heritage-led regeneration initiative lead by Historic England with the council and the local community to create economic growth and improve the quality of life in our historic high street on Oxford Road, Castle Street, Gun Street, St Mary’s Butts and the Market Place. The Museum hosts two online exhibitions created by the project exploring the diverse heritage of the Oxford Road - Oxford Road Stories and Lifespring Stories.
  • Reading's Windrush Generation - in 2019 we celebrated the contribution of the Windrush Generation with Windrush community sports and cultural events. A community bid in partnership with the Alliance of Community Cohesion in Reading (ACRE), Barbados and Friends Association (BAFA), Reading Caribbean Associations Group (CAG) and Age UK Berkshire, secured funding for four new community events. Another successfully bid for Windrush 2020 created an online exhibition about the story and contribution Windrush generation.
  • In India's Image - a project with Arts Asia, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, that rediscovered the Anglo-Indian architecture in south east England. This resulted in a multimedia exhibition at the Museum focusing on the Maharajah's Well at nearby Stoke Row and also discovered hidden stories in the Museum's collections.
  • #digiRDG - Town and Country  - a digital participation and skills project with The Museum of English Rural Life, funded by Arts Council England, find out what we did on this blog by our project manager.
  • Happy Museum commissions - Revealing Reading's Hidden Histories and Where's Reading Heading (see film link below) were both supported by the Happy Museum to which we are an Affiliate Member. Research by local volunteers resulted in a series of popular history leaflets exploring the surprising heritage of Dee Park, Newtown and Oxford Road. This activity has been recognised beyond Reading. The Oxford Consultants for Social Inclusion noted recently that 'the project drew on alternative historical narratives of clay excavations, red brick heritage, manufacturing and recent social history to shape remarkable civic stories'.  While ‘Where’s Reading Heading’, looked at the issues around building a successful low carbon economy for the future while protecting the town’s environment.
  • On Track : Reading's Railways - the 2016 exhibition was part of the town’s ‘Year of Culture’. This was a real community exhibition with individuals, local groups and other museums and heritage centres all lending material. This helped us tell the story of how the railways impacted on the town.
  • Legacy of Valour - a collaboration between the Museum and the Legacy of Valour project. This award-winning exhibition highlighted the connection of Indian pilots with Reading where they were trained as Royal Flying Corps combat pilots.
  • The Great Art Quest - a Children & the Arts initiative brought Reading schoolchildren together with artists and storytellers to experiment both in the museum and in their schools. They responded to the museum’s Sense of Place exhibition producing their own sculpture, collaborative artworks and plays.
  • Reading Abbey Revealed - our major project to conserve, interpret and open up the Abbey Quarter. This has included our Museum On Wheels outreach programme in Reading's neighbourhoods.
