In this live virtual session, developed in partnership with CultureMix and in association with Reading Windrush Project Group, we will give children an introduction to Black History and its importance to understand Reading and its community.
We will use the beautiful Reading Black History Memorial Mural as a guide to explore black history before, during and after the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
With the help of short video-interviews from members of Reading's Caribbean community, archival images, and activities, the children will unveil the stories of role models and events from Black History who shaped our communities, understand the emotional and practical hardship of members of Reading’s Windrush Generation, and learn about the amazing contributions of the Black community to Reading’s culture and art.
The session includes original resources and videos created by CultureMix, an international music and carnival arts company based in Berkshire, UK with roots in African Caribbean culture - from steel pan music and Carnival masquerade of Trinidad and Tobago, to Jamaican reggae music. These include:
- Video introduction to Steel Pan Music
- Video activity – make music with anything you have
- Black History Memorial Mural booklet
- Craft activity – make your own Carnival Headdress
The session is designed for KS2 and KS3 but it can be adapted for secondary schools.
Brilliant use of local timeline which children recognised. The children enjoyed the videos and activities and particularly enjoyed the interviews. The session followed on well from our earlier session on Windrush.
